Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to recreate the higher calling he encountered as head of the Three Lions.

The former coach indicated his aim to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the next generation and countering what he called a pervasive negative narrative now found in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Beyond Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding rumors linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Prior to the publication of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, the author emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for teenagers, utilizing experiences from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He believes that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Common Ground Above Discord

He insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often emphasizes conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to offer additional perspectives on leadership and country pride based on his notable professional journey.
