Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
