The East African nation Receives Cultural Artefacts After a 100-Year Residence in a German Family
Exactly 12 ancient artefacts have been officially returned to the Ethiopian nation after being kept by a household from Germany for in excess of 100 years.
These items, initially acquired in the early twentieth century by the German representative to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his wife Hedwig, were delivered on midweek to the research center at the university in Addis Ababa.
This collection featured royal crowns, armor and artistic works, each viewed as historically valuable in Ethiopia.
"The items continue to stand as a emblem of the enduring and friendly relationship between the German nation and Ethiopia," remarked Ferdinand von Weyhe, Germany's representative to the East African country.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose father was delivered during the household's diplomatic posting in Ethiopia, handed over the objects at a event attended by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He said that the household's aim to return the treasures was to "share their appeal with the public and preserve the heritage and history tied to my father's birth."
The items were either considered presents or buys, based on the family.
"We want to thank Professor Weiss's family for concretely expressing their profound appreciation for the nation by diligently maintaining these artifacts and crucially guaranteeing their return to their rightful country," said the minister of tourism.
She continued that the artefacts would soon be made accessible to the general audience for study and scholarly work, calling the action a landmark in preserving the nation's cultural heritage.
"Initiatives are ongoing to return old artifacts that are located in the hands of private persons and institutions throughout the globe," she stated.
During colonial rule in the African continent, many of traditional items were taken.
The call by nations in Africa for the restoration of stolen objects has been answered with some progress in lately - though several items are merely on loan.
In the year 2022, Germany was the pioneering state to return a portion of the famous Benin Bronzes to the West African nation as part of an effort to address its "complex colonial history."
