UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
